Valentine Heart Art (Or Playing With My Food)

Valentine's Day Heart Art | eyes bigger than my stomach

I’m not super big on Valentine’s Day.

I’m not super big on anything where you’re made to feel obligated to give or do things.  It’s partly why I hate birthdays, don’t like the gift aspect of Christmas and struggle with Mothers and Father’s day.   I don’t like my giving (or receiving) to be mandated by a calendar.   I prefer it to be mandated by my heart.  My heart’s pretty good at knowing when it wants to do something nice for somebody!

But, I’ll make a lil confession…

I love the cheerful girlyness  of Valentine’s Day (and Easter)!

January in Vancouver is just so grey and depressing and gloomy that seeing bright reds and pinks and purples everywhere makes me so ridiculously happy!  And who doesn’t love hearts?  Aren’t hearts one of the first things we learn to doodle when we’re little?

As soon as I see the big bulk candy bins filled up with Valentine candy I have a ridiculous urge to buy it all and fill up glass jars and containers with pink jellybeans and red jube jubes and foil covered chocolate hearts and spread them all over my office with red heart banners and lacy doily art.

The only problem with that is… I would eat ALL of it.

I don’t often buy food just for the sake of playing with it in photos or making art with it.  It feels wasteful.  Buuuuuut… is candy really food?  Plus, it’s so cheap!

So I did… I hit the bulk bins at the grocery store and stocked up on fudge filled hearts, jellybeans and sour jelly hearts.

Ok… and three Lindt chocolate hearts – because those are food.

When I say I stocked up… i just bought little tiny bags of the stuff – enough to make some Valentine Heart Art – so that if I ate them all I wouldn’t fall into a diabetic coma so that when I ate them all I didn’t fall into a diabetic coma.  Good stuff.

I’ve been making Valentine Heart Art since I took this not very good photo 8 years ago that for some reason, took off on flickr.  Since then I’ve done quite a few others – like my anti-valentine, or the most delicious salted caramel cookies, more cinnamon heart art and, my favourite – cranberry chocolate chunk cookies!

Photography & Creativity Notes

Doing little projects like this is a great way to flex your creative muscles in different directions, which is always a good thing.  It’s a chance to get fun and silly and it doesn’t have to cost much money.  I like practicing on white because it’s a challenge to get the lighting right and the post processing. (I still need to work on it).

I think it’s always a good idea to do something a little out of your box and comfort zone and our imaginations can always use a work out.  Just think to what it was like as a kid to play with your food and make something fun!

If you do get creative, leave me a link in the comments – I’d love to see your Valentine Heart Art!
